Intruder Alert

The other day, while I was at work, I received a phone call -

Mrs. Kel, we've received a signal that your house alarm is going off, would you like for us to call the police?

I rushed home that day, fear and anger cursing through my veins. How dare someone choose to violate our house, our stuff -intrude without being invited. I was mad, but not because our 'things' might be gone, but because the thought of irreplaceable things, like our photos(on my computer) or little token mementos the hub has given me might forever be lost.

In that space, fueled by my own blinding rage I ripped open the door to my house and proceeded to inspect each room like a mad woman. I'm not sure what I thought I would find or even if I'd really thought thru what I would do if I did find someone (perhaps threaten them with my cell phone) but I did not find anyone and everything looked just as it did when we left that morning.

That morning I lost a little innocence, my false sense of safety and yet I gained an insight into a part of me I had never seen before.

I've worked hard for what I have today. The hub and I have worked together to build a comfortable life for our family and while there are things I would be sad to see gone, material things that can be replaced, I know that my families safety is what matters most. In that brief moment, knowing my family was safe despite everything else that might have taken place was what mattered.

And well...now I know my weapon of choice if ever caught off guard is most likely my cell phone!

Do you remember your first thought in a panic?

wow - you are brave to march right in!! We have our alarm go off every now and then and I never think that it is an intruder - always something else - I guess I am a bit too not realistic!! But it IS always something else - like some damn bday balloon! or the dog!

My parents house got broken into when I was in High School. They took my mom's wallet and my purse. I found the contents of my purse in a neighbors yard. I hadn't went to bed until 2:00am the night before, so the fact that they could've been sitting outside waiting for me to go to bed? Very creepy.

(The police thought it was someone we knew b/c they knew where our purses were and they came in the back down knowing it wasn't locked)

But seriously- that's really scary that your alarm went off. Did they tell you where it went off at (like a door? Or a window?)

When my house was broken into 3+ years ago, I felt such a sense of anger, outrage, I felt so exposed and naked...I couldn't believe some STRANGER had been in my house (thankfully they didn't steal anything cuz the house alarm going off scared them away!) but my biggest fear was NOT for my property. The jerk had left my kitchen window wide open so I was FREAKING out that my cats had escaped...I Had to immediately search the house and find them and breathe a sigh of relief...cuz my fur-babies were not replaceable!

Yikes. I can't imagine how violated you must have felt.

Stay safe.

We've had our house broken into before and we've also suffered a serious flood - it is no fun going through that sort of invasion or loss. I'm glad everything was okay - next time grab a shovel or bat before you enter the house - silly!

Take care - Kellan

Our home was robbed once and it is a horrible feeling. They left our DVR, but took everything else. We figured out, based on a show we recorded, that the thieves had been in the house just 30 min. before I arrived. Very scary.

By the way, I am having a contest at Belle of the Blog. Please stop by and see how you can win some Ferrero Rocher!

This hits home for me. The house directly across the street from us was robbed a few weeks ago, at a VERY rare time when my children were home alone. Freaked me out, and needless to say the children are NEVER home alone now. A few more homes have been hit in the past few weeks in my quiet, nice neighborhood, and the other night, hubby saw someone in our yard, and when they saw or heard him coming they ran away.
We are being super-cautious right now. It's scary!
